January 17, 2011: Surinder Kumar Jhakar, 56, IFFCO chairman and son of former Madhya Pradesh governor Balram Jhakar, was killed on Monday when his pistol went off accidentally while he was cleaning it, at his farmhouse at Abhor in Ferozpur district of Punjab.
Surinder, the second of the three sons of senior Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. He was involved with the cooperative movement for nearly three decades. Expressing grief over Surinder Jakhar's death, Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said his contribution to the cooperative movement was invaluable.

January 25, 2011: Canadian oil and gas producer Americas Petrogas Inc (API) and India's fertilizer major in the co-operative sector IFFCO announced a shale gas discovery with a potential of 100 trillion cubic feet (tcf) in their Nequen basin in Argentina. The companies are in talks with oil and gas majors like Gail India, Oil India, Total, Apache and ExxonMobil for participation in developing this fields. IFFCO has 15% stake in API. IFFCO already has a similar arrangement in Oman jointly with Oman Oil Company.

January 28, 2011: IFFCO Aonla Unit received two awards, namely, 'Most Innovative Environmental Project Award' and 'Most Useful Environmental Project Award' from 'CII' under CII Environmental Best Practices Award-2011, for installation of Carbon Di-Oxide Recovery (CDR) Unit. These awards have been constituted by 'CII' for excellence in the field of Environment Management.

February 07, 2011: Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd's (IFFCO's) foray into the power sector with a planned 1,320-Mw coal pithead-based unit in Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh has failed to get the necessary environmental and forest clearances. ICPL is a joint venture between multi-billion dollar cooperative giant, IFFCO and Chhattisgarh State Power Holding Company Ltd.

July 06, 2011: The Rs. 7544 Crore, 1320 MW thermal power project is now on takeoff stage, after getting the recent go ahead for stage one forest clearance to mine the Tara coal block from Ministry of Environment and Forests. Private land acquisition has been completed and with all statuary clearances in hand, the project is expected to commence production by 2015. Fertilizer manufacturer, Indian Farmers Fertilizer Co-operative (IFFCO) Ltd plans to go public with its power project IFFCO Chhattisgarh Power Limited (ICPL).

July 12, 2011: Fertilizer major IFFCO’s subsidiary IFFCO Kisan Sanchar Ltd (IKSL) has bagged Coffey International Award for its unique mobile service initiative empowering farmers.
UK-based Coffey International Limited, a leading global professional services consultancy, sponsored the award to encourage companies that contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
IKSL, a joint-venture between IFFCO and telecom companies Bharti Airtel and Star Mobitel, initiated ‘M-Powering Farmers Mobile Phone Service’ to help farmers become more productive, profitable and sustainable by providing easier access to agricultural information via mobile phones. IKSL has a subscriber base of about 4 million farmers.

August 02, 2011: The Rs 5000 crore expansion plan of Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) has been held up due to non-allocation of gas by the Union government, chairman of the India’s largest fertilizer cooperative N P Patel said. “We have achieved highest ever growth with production of over 8.58 million tonnes of fertilizer in 2010-11 from all our plants at Kalol, Kandla, Phulpur, Aonla and Paradeep which are operating at full capacity,” Mr. Patel told media persons. "IFFCO has already availed mandatory clearances from the concerned authorities and it fears project cost escalations on account of delays in gas allocation. Work on expansion would start only after firm allocation of gas from government of India and it would take nearly 30 months to complete from then."
After completion of expansion at Kalol, IFFCO would be all set to realize the objective of producing 10 million tonne of fertilizer, he said. When asked if IFFCO was planning an Initial Public Offer (IPO), Patel said that they have thought about it, but since this was a farmers’ cooperative the decision would be taken by all the (40,000 member) cooperatives. 

August 31, 2011: Fertilizer major IFFCO’s Paradeep unit in Orissa has won two prestigious awards for “Excellence in Energy Conservation” and”Corporate Social Responsibility.”
“Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” award under 'National Energy Management Award – 2011' was presented at a function organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Hyderabad. The Prize was presented by Director General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ajay Mathur at a ceremony held on August 25 at Hyderabad. The Prestigious Award was received by M R Patel, Sr. Executive Director of IFFCO, Paradeep Unit. Besides, IFFCO’s Paradeep Unit was awarded by Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar for Significant Contribution in CSR Activities. A trophy was presented on August 25 at the Award giving ceremony in Bhubaneswar. 
It may be recalled that last year also IFFCO’s Paradeep Unit had won “National Energy Conservation Award 2010 along with Certificate of Merit” for its significant contribution towards Energy Conservation in Fertilizer Sector from the Union Minister of Power.
Besides, the IFFCO unit also received 11th Global Greentech Environment Excellence Award 2010 – Silver” for its outstanding achievement in Environment Management in Fertilizer Sector.
Meanwhile IFFCO Paradeep Unit has been selling surplus Power generated by its captive power plant to GRIDCO, Orissa since last three years.

September 01, 2011: SKOCH Digital Inclusion Awards 2011 for the category “Value Added Services” was conferred on IFFCO Kisan Sanchar Limited for its initiative, “Farmers Empowerment through Mobile Phones” at the SKOCH Digital Inclusion Day, organized at Hotel Shangri-La, Asoka Road, New Delhi. SKOCH Awards are based on nominations received from Corporate, Government, Civil Society and Financial Service sectors for various categories of SKOCH Digital Inclusion Awards, 2011 that salute exemplary use of technology to serve the country for the economic power.

September 20, 2011: Indian Farm Forestry Development Cooperative Ltd. (IFFDC) that has been engaged in the developmental activities like Afforestation, Watershed Development, and Crop Development etc. since its inception has won the Times of India Social Impact award as a Corporate under the Livelihood category. The Jury that consisted of names like Nitish Kumar, Deepak Parikh, Nandan Nilekani, Jairam Ramesh, Aruna Roy and Sunita Narain selected IFFDC for this award and applauded the work done by IFFDC in improving livelihood in Villages throughout the country and especially in Rajasthan, UP and MP.

October 04, 2011: Ice has broken between the apex cooperative organization NCUI and cooperative fertilizer giant IFFCO on the issue of Education Fund. National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) is finally getting a cheque of Rs 4.60 crore from IFFCO- a contribution towards Education Fund maintained by NCUI.
Cooperative societies have to make a contribution of a part of their profit towards Education Fund. Since majority of cooperative in the country are running in red, there are a few only which has obligation of contributing towards this Fund. Issue of contribution to Education Fund had become bone of contention between IFFCO and NCUI with former demanding judicious spending of the Fund. While releasing cheque this time again, IFFCO has expressed its concern.

October 07, 2011: Education Fund Committee has two new members-IFFCO and Saraswat Bank. They are replacing Kribhco and Kopal bank. The committee to decide on the judicious spending from Education Fund has five members which include President of NCUI, Central Registrar, Chief Executive of NCUI and two eminent cooperators. IFFCO and Saraswat have bagged their place this time. IFFCO has posted profit to the tune of more than a thousand crore rupees this year.
