Perils of the "western model"

What is Modernisation?
  • Is it disrespecting elders?
  • or wearing short clothes?
  • or kissing your love in the public?
  • or forgetting our own language and culture??
You can see people blabbering non-stop in English. Specially the ones from city and metros. They feel guilty when talking in our national language ie Hindi. Speaking English is a must nowadays but from where does this myth originate that we become modern as the westerners if we start speaking their language in our daily lives?

People spend out at costly places. Eating and spending thousands of Rupees at Mc Donalds and CCD is common. But why the people coming out of these restaurants and Malls refuse to give some money to the poor?

Is Corruption the only problem killing India? The youth has the reponsibility to carry forward this nation. What about many youths drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes? No one is refrained from having fun in their lives but why does most of the youth think that hanging out at disc's and losing virginity at a very early age are prior aims?

India is respected everywhere for its values and culture. It is a thing we can truly be proud of. But does caressing and smooching in public (eg: parks) make us more advanced? Elders and the respect for elders is a major component in Indian culture. The West needs to learn a great deal from us: Cherishing and caring for the elderly - not alone in material terms but emotionally and spiritually. But what is actually happening? We are sending our parents to Old Age home. Dividing as soon as we are married. Where are the readings of Vedas, Upanishads and great epics lost?

Some girls think that the shorter and the more revealing their dress is, the more modern they are. This is our country and we have the freedom to do whatever we want. But can anyone explain the relation between the amount of skin revealed and modernisation?
Slut-walk - an origin of Toronto, Canada was set out in India. Why? Because "Expats find us too Conservative." Answer yourself: "How would you feel if your mother or sister wears 'this' kind of clothes and sit beside you?" Again these westerners are trying to intervene in our tradition as they did in our past. Prophesies of cultural decay and decline are becoming true.

Rampant consumerism was the reason for England's unsafe streets. "Don't imitate these examples". The street unrest in England and America's economic woes were only the precursor of things to come and if India did not draw its lessons and immediately jettison the decadent ways of the West, a worse fate was in store for it.

I don't believe Western culture is superior. The sad thing is that most cultures replace all old traditions with new. Of course not all are good or healthy and should be changed.
But some old traditions are good and healthy and should be kept.
Change is inevitable -but- at the cost of our Culture?
